C/2012 S1 (ISON)
Wikipedia
C/2012 S1 (ISON) is a sungrazing comet discovered on 21 September 2012 by Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok...Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) will come to perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) on 28 November 2013
|
On September 21, 2011, the discovery of C/2012 S1 (ISON) was made by Vitali Nevski, of Vitebsk, Belarus, and Artyom Novichonok, of Kondopoga, Russia with a 16-inch reflector telescope of the International Scientific Optical Network, whose abbreviation, ISON, has thankfully been made the official name of the comet near Kislovodsk, Russia.
Being called the comet of the century, Comet ISON could be the brightest comet to visit our area since 1680.
Comet ISON will pass relatively close to the Sun (just under one million miles at its closest point on November 28, 2013) this close approach will cause much of the comet's ice to melt, releasing gas and dust and producing what could be a tail of enormous length, perhaps long enough to stretch half-way across the night sky.
Comet ISON's projected path will put it close enough to the Earth that we should get a magnificent display. Those in the Northern Hemisphere will get to witness the show by mid to late December, 2013, as the comet could glow many times brighter than a full Moon.
